The Italian contribution and the new INCiPiT research network coordinated by the University Paediatric Hospital Bambino Gesù. 2016 is the first year in which a significant increase of new drugs approved by the EMA (European Medicines Agency) for the paediatric population has been observed. There are 36 new molecules now in distribution: drugs for the treatment of HIV also in combination, monoclonal products for haemophilia, the new eltrombopag for immune thrombocytopenia, four new drugs for childhood tumors and 6 orphan drugs for the rare diseases such as the Fabry disease. The last day of the SMART project’s Summer School, organized by Consorzio Valutazioni Biologiche e Farmacologiche moved to Canosa di Puglia, at the headquarters of Farmalabor, an Apulian company founded in 2001 with the aim of enhancing and spreading the culture of galenic formulations. To do so, it manufactures and markets raw materials (active ingredients and excipients), packaging and equipment necessary for the production of galenic drugs by pharmacies, hospitals, and national and international pharmaceutical companies. Consorzio per Valutazioni Biologiche e Farmacologiche with the University of Bari, Department of Pharmacy and the Gianni Benzi Pharmacological Research Foundation have promoted the SMART project - Small Medicines Advanced Research Training - funded by the European program H2020, whose purpose is to boost knowledge and exchange of expertise covering all aspects of pediatric studies from ethics to methodology, innovative studies such as modeling and extrapolation, the production of ad hoc pediatric formulations. SMART is a replicable and exportable interaction model, in which research, innovative enterprise and public administration work together to shape a smart development, sustainable and inclusive strategy to be applied to the development of pediatric medicines. SMART can benefit from the expertise of international experts from University College London and the University of Marseille. This was discussed in Bari during the scientific summer school scheduled from 19th to 23rd September, 2016. The event has been quoted by TGNorba with an interview to Prof. ceci (CVBF scientific director) and Prof. Gesualdo (chair of the School of Medicine, University of Bari) and several journals. The first Summer School of the SMART (Small Medicines Advanced Research Training) Project will be organised in Bari from 19th to 23rd September 2016. SMART is a EU funded project aimed at raising the Instytut Pomnik Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka (IPCZD – Poland) staff’s research profile and increase capacity in providing innovative paediatric research methods. A specific training programme is foreseen including the organisation of staff exchanges, face to face courses and summer schools. These activities are oriented to share experience, promote cross-interaction among disciplines and institutions, boost the project’s cohesion and ensure the effective participation of all partners.
