Description

ARPEC (Antibiotic Resistance and Prescribing in European Children) is a 3-year project funded under the European Union framework with an international Consortium comprising 15 European partners and coordinated by Saint George’s Hospital Medical School (SGUL).

The general objective of the ARPEC project is to improve the quality of antibiotic prescribing for children in Europe and to reduce the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in bacterial infections in children. The project aims to establish a network of Paediatric Infectious Disease specialists to develop evidence about variations in antibiotic resistance and prescribing practices. This evidence will inform educational programs for practicing and trainee paediatricians, including a formal training module on prudent antimicrobial prescribing developed in collaboration with the European Academy of Paediatrics. The aim of this study will build on existing paediatric infectious diseases networks, including PENTA, ESPID and TEDDY. The project will use established methodologies from ESAC and EARSS and existing community prescribing databases to develop a prospective surveillance system to monitor rates of antibiotic prescribing and resistance in European children.

CVBF is involved in the ARPEC project and participates in three specific work packages: the Point Prevalence Survey of Paediatric Hospital Antimicrobial Consumption (WP5), the Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance in Europe in Serious Bacterial Infection in Children (WP6), and the Variation of paediatric antimicrobial prescribing guidelines between European countries (WP7).
