GIANMARTINO BENZI
GIANMARTINO
BENZI was named full professor of pharmacology 1974 where
he was 43 years old and in 1965 and 1967 he received the
PhD’s in Pharmacology and Toxicology, respectively.
As from 1974 he has been the Head of the Institute of Pharmacology
- Faculty of Science, Pavia University.
In 1999 he founded the Postgraduate School on Regulatory
Science, an European level interdisciplinary school in which
6 Faculties were included and from December 2000 Prof. Benzi
has been President of the CVBF (Consorzio per le Valutazioni
Biologiche e Farmacologiche) established by the University
of Pavia and the “Salvatore Maugeri” Foundation
and aimed to support the European procedures for the development
of medicinal products.
The main scientific interest areas of Prof. Benzi have been
represented by neurobiology and neuropathology of ageing
and degenerative disorders, by cerebral and muscular bioenergetics
and biophysics in sports medicine and regulatory sciences.
For his research on neurobiology he was two times included
in the Nobel Price short-list.
Prof. Benzi has been an expert at the Italian
and European Union health Authorities and Bodies level.
In particular he has been:
- member of the Antidoping Commission and Committees held
by the FIDAL, CONI, IOC and the Italian Minister of Health.
- Consultant of the Committee on Environment, Public Health
and Consumer Protection of the European Parliament.
- Member of the scientific Committee for Biologics and Biotechnology
of the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministers.
- the European Parliament Representative on the Management
Board of the ‚ EMEA - European Agency for the Evaluation
of Medicinal Products for medicinal products for human use
(for five consecutive mandates).
- member of the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products
at the EMEA and of the European Working Party on Herbal
Medicines
- member of the EMEA HMPC (Committee on Herbal Medicines
Products).
